Leonardo chairs the last session of the 98th MPEG meeting. As announced in the press release, this a partial list of results:

  1. Final approval of DASH, first International Standard for dynamic adaptive streaming of multimedia content over HTTP
  2. Start of the new MPEG-H suite of standards, “High Efficiency Coding and Media Delivery in Heterogeneous Environments”

  3. Plans for an MPEG-H 3D Audio Event at the 99th meeting in San José, CA

  4. Formal start of work towards royalty-free video coding in two tacks. One, called IVC, focuses on developing a standard based on MPEG-1 technology. A second track, called WebVC, is driven by stakeholders of AVC technology

  5. Launch of a new activity to create Augmented Reality Application Format

  6. Review of submissions to Call for Proposals on Compact Descriptors for Visual Search (CDVS), a new initiative to facilitate the retrieval of images and video based on characteristic similar parts

  7. Issuing of a Call for Requirements on Multimedia Preservation Description Information (MPDI)

The IEEE has published the paper Multimedia Service Platform Technologies by Sergio Matone (CEDEO), Panos Kudumakis and Mark Sandler (QMUL) and Xin Wang (Huawei). The paper introduces the emerging MPEG-M standard and wim.tv that is based on that standard.

Ten years after the last MPEG meeting held in Italy (55th meeting, Pisa, January 2001) the Polytechnic of Turin has hosted the 97th MPEG meeting. The attendance of close to 500 experts has been the second largest ever. Here are the most notable results:
